Police department gets use-of-force training simulator

The Swatara Township Police Department has new technology aimed at helping officers decide when they should and should not use force.

“It kind of puts them in similar scenarios where they may encounter someone that has a firearm, and at that point, that officer would have to engage in conversation with that individual and try to prevent them from either harming themselves, others or the officer,” said Cpl. Brandon Porkrop.

Brightwood Career Institute donated the laser shot simulator to the police department. It helps officers keep up with their use of force training and practice their firearm accuracy.

“We haven’t had something like this in this department, at least in the 11 years that I’ve been here, so we’re very excited to have the opportunity to train more,” Pokrop said.
