Rally held to support bill that would save TMI

Supporters of a bill that would save Three Mile Island from closing rallied to remind lawmakers that the plant needs help.

If the bill is not passed by June 1, TMI owner Exelon has threatened to close the nuclear power plant.

“It’s a huge economic impact. The school district gets hit, the county gets hit, and so does that local municipality right here, but it reaches out even further than that. It reaches out to all the other municipalities around us,” Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) said.

Critics say that every nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania except for TMI is profitable so the bill would be nothing more than a corporate handout. They call the bill an expensive bailout that would cost taxpayers a half billion dollars a year.
