Work to replace the Route 22 bridge over Interstate 83 near Harrisburg will close an on-ramp at the Exit 50 interchange next week.
The on-ramp from westbound Route 22 to northbound I-83 will be closed for about a week beginning in the very early morning hours of Monday, June 11 so that a new on-ramp can be completed,.according to a PennDOT news release.
PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said the official detour will direct drivers first south on I-83 to Union Deposit Road at Exit 48, and then onto northbound I-83.
This work at the Exit 50 interchange is part of a project to replace three bridges over I-83 in Lower Paxton Township; Elmerton Avenue, Route 22, and Union Deposit Road.
The Elmerton Avenue bridge was rebuilt in 2016, and construction of the Union Deposit Road bridge wrapped up last fall.
Penny said the Route 22 bridge should be substantially complete by the end of this year.
The three new bridges will provide the width necessary to widen I-83 to six lanes. The I-83 widening project is scheduled to start late this year and finish in 2021.
