Hundreds of Pennsylvania students take part in mock government

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Some 700 middle and high school students from across Pennsylvania are at the state Capitol this weekend for the PA YMCA Youth and Government Program’s model government.

The students are acting as lawmakers, lawyers, Supreme Court justices, and even journalists.

Throughout the year, participants in the Youth & Government program hold elections and conferences. Over the weekend, they will get a taste of what working at the state Capitol is really like.

“It teaches you about the importance of engaging in comprehensive discourse with your peers, which is something in this era of gridlock we don’t see anymore and which is so important,” said Rishin Sharma, the PA YMCA’s youth governor. “In addition to that, it’s just an outlet for such intellectual creativity, which isn’t offered in the classroom.”

Dauphin County Commissioners on Friday awarded $5,000 in tourism grant funding for the model government program.
