An inmate who walked away from work release at the Franklin County Jail is back in custody.

State police said 40-year-old Jeremy Smith surrendered Sunday.

Smith, of Fayetteville, failed to return to the prison May 12 after his scheduled work release program. Police said he borrowed his mother’s car and took $50 in cash from her.

Court documents show he had been arrested in January for DUI charges.

He now faces additional charges of escape, theft by unlawful taking, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

His bail was set at $100,000 cash.
