Lancaster chef who served in White House has fond memories of George HW Bush

John Moeller started working as a White House sous chef in 1992.

That’s when he met President George H.W. Bush.

“He was such a down to earth person it caught me by surprise,” Moeller recalled.

Moeller became close with the 41st President of the United States through Christmas parties.

Moeller, who grew up in Lancaster County, said he and President Bush never talked politics.

Moeller, who now owns the Greenfield Restaurant Bar and Grill, said one of his favorite memories was the time he served Bush an Asian dinner.

“He came back after dinner to the kitchen and he shook my hand,” Moeller said. “He said, ‘John, in the four years I’ve been here, I’ve never had a meal like that. Thank you.'”

Moeller still has cherished memorabilia from Bush, like photos and cards.

“He was a great American who loved his country,” Moeller said. “He served it well in the private sector and public sector.”

Moeller also served as White House sous chef for President Clinton and George W. Bush.
