Surveillance cameras caught an ongoing problem in Manheim Township.
The cameras picked up the latest incident of thefts from vehicles.
Last year Manheim Township police officers responded to almost 300 similar cases.
“The key with these was that over 95 percent of the victims vehicles were unlocked,” Sergeant Michael Piancentino said. “They were leaving valuable property in the vehicle allowing people to get access to the vehicle without having to smash a window.”
In order to cut down on the number of the crimes police have started a “Like it? Lock it!” campaign.
As part of the campaign magnets with the “like it? lock it” phrase will be placed on vehicles.
Piacentino told ABC 27 News that thefts from vehicles is one of the easiest crimes to prevent.
“It is one of those ones,” he added. “Especially when the vehicle is unlocked, it can easily be prevented. If you just lock your vehicle.”
Eventually police plan on canvassing neighborhoods, leaving flyers and reminding folks to lock their vehicles.
“The message I want people to walk away with is please lock your vehicles,” Piacentino said. “Please secure your property. Don’t leave valuables inside.”
“Like It? Lock It!” magnets are available at the Manheim Township Police Department.
