A woman was arrested after she passed out from heroin use in a car with a 3-year-old child, police said.

Ashlea Bernard, 35, was found unconscious in the driver’s seat of a car parked at the Ephrata Walmart on Monday morning.

Ephrata police said they found the child in the front passenger seat while Bernard had heroin and held a syringe.

Bernard, who has a last known address in Montgomery County, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of children.

She also had outstanding arrest warrants from Lancaster and Berks counties.

The child was taken into protective custody.
