LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – Authorities say scam artists have been sending people child pornography then posing as law enforcement to demand a fine.
The callers have claimed to be from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office which has received several reports, from outside of Lancaster County, about the scam, the district attorney’s office said.
Authorities said the scam begins when someone responds to a dating website ruse. The scammer poses as a 23-year-old woman and sends the child pornography during communication.
The target then receives a call from someone claiming to be from the sheriff’s office. The caller demands payment of a $500 fine and threatens jail if the target does not pay.
Anyone who believes they were targeted in this scam should immediately contact their local police department.
