Calls for service on home heating systems have been adding up for Todd Valle.
Valle is a service technician for Seth Energy. He says since temperatures dropped below zero, the biggest problem he sees is heating systems working too hard.
Valle says some people adjust their thermostats too much. He said an adjustment of more than two degrees can cause problems.
“What ends up happening is it puts a load on the unit to run longer,” Valle explained. “Hot air systems, if you don’t have the right kind of ductwork, it really makes it work even harder.”
Valle said the biggest tip he gives during cold weather is to make sure you have a clean air filter. He said when your heating system is working harder, it’s collecting more dirt.
Valle said if you hold your filter up to the light and can’t see through it, it needs to be replaced.
“The better filters, you need to change them more because they don’t let [anything] through,” he said.
