Man’s death in pond ruled accidental

MERCERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The death of a Mercersburg man found after a massive five-day search for him last week has been ruled accidental.

Gregory Cole drowned in a pond near his home in the 10000-block of Knob Road, in Montgomery Township, Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey Conner said Monday.

Cole, 51, went missing on the afternoon of May 5 and was found Thursday morning. A search for him involved numerous police agencies and Cole’s employer, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The search also involved state police dive teams from Maryland and Delaware, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Civil Air Patrol, fire companies, and water search and rescue teams.

Cole likely was best known in the area for coaching the girl’s soccer team at Greencastle-Antrim High School for eight years until 2016.
