Multiple bills seek to eliminate school property taxes

A bill introduced in the Senate would allow 100 percent an owner-occupied home’s value to be exempt from school property taxes.

It would be through the Homestead Exemption.

Before last year, such a bill would be deemed unconstitutional. But voters decided to allow up to a 100 percent exemption, and some lawmakers are now trying to make that happen.

The Senate bill would also raise the state’s personal income tax by almost two percent, with that extra money going back into the school system, not the General Fund.

A similar bill has also been introduced in the House.
