ROYALTON, Pa. (WHTM) — One person is dead and a firefighter was hospitalized after a fire ravaged a home in Royalton Borough, Dauphin County on Sunday, Jan. 23.

According to a press release from the borough, the fire was reported by a next-door neighbor at 9:14 p.m. on the 500 block of Water Street. Multiple fire companies from Dauphin County including Middletown, Londonberry, and Lower Swatara fire departments responded to the scene.

While crews were battling the blaze, the second floor collapsed on four Middletown firefighters, which caused them to be trapped. Three firefighters from Swatara Fire-Rescue Department were saved by their own crew and were unharmed.

According to an email from Dauphin County Press Secretary Brett Hambright, 67-year-old William Hardy died in the fire. The incident will be investigated in collaboration with Royalton Police, the Dauphin County Coroner’s office, and the Dauphin Fire Investigation Task Force,

Middletown firefighter Shawn Menear was trapped for almost 40 minutes before he was extracted. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was stabilized before being flown out to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Update from Jan. 28 on abc27 News Daybreak:

In an update, the fire department said Menear is stable after suffering second- and third-degree burns to his right leg and that he had his first of many surgeries to repair damage to muscles and apply skin grafts. They’re hosting a stuffed chicken breast dinner in February where all proceeds will benefit the Menear family.

The dinner will be on February 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the American Legion on East High Street in Middletown. The dinner includes stuffed chicken, baked pasta, mashed potatoes and much more for $18 a person. The department can serve up to 150 people on a first-come, first-serve basis.
