PennDOT is typically staffed with temporary snow plow operators by November, but hiring has been difficult this year.
So far, only half of the available positions have been filled.
“There’s a very big demand for truck drivers, especially in the last few years as the economy has improved, it’s been tougher to attract seasonal workers or temporary workers in the wintertime,” PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said.
If PennDOT can’t fill the remaining positions, drivers would have longer hours and secondary roads could feel the cold shoulder.
“When we don’t have a full complement, we have to make adjustments,” Penny said. “Our emphasis is on interstate highways and expressways, but we have a lot of smaller roads, low traffic volume roads that would have to take a lower priority.”
