Pennsylvania Democrats propose new voting, registration bills

Democrats in the state House want to make it easier to vote in Pennsylvania.

A package of bills includes proposals for early voting up to a month before Election Day, voting by mail, and making Election Day and the day of the primary election state holidays.

Other measures would make it easier to register to vote, such as same-day registration and automatic registration.

Republican strategist Chris Nicholas, of Eagle Consulting Group, says same-day registration would be an added burden on poll workers.

“Until the Democrats really talk about how they would integrate that in a secure fashion, to me, that’s really a non-starter,” Nicholas said.

Nicholas said there are some bills Republicans may support, such as having a longer period for absentee ballots and no-excuse absentee ballots. Overall, however, he said he doesn’t see the whole package passing the House.
