Police have new photos in ’79 cold case

Investigators have new photos that may help them finally solve a 39-year-old Jane Joe case in Perry County.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has released sketches of what the young woman may have looked like before her skeletal remains were found along the Juniata River near Newport in the summer of 1979.

Police found several pieces of handmade turquoise jewelry near the body and hoped it would help them to quickly identify her, but they still don’t know who she was, where she came from, or who left her along the riverbank.

Three years ago, investigators used her teeth and hair to determine she likely grew up in the Great Lakes regions and visited the Southwest a few months before her death.
