Rally to shut down PA immigration facility

Local

Dozens of protesters were at the State Capitol on Monday, demanding the shut down of an immigration facility here in Pennsylvania.

The Berks County Family Detention Center is one of three family detention centers in the country.

Members of the “Shut Down Berks Coalition” rallied inside the Capitol, asking Governor Wolf to issue an “Emergency Removal Order” to shut the center down.

“I’m here to say parents like me, across the country, are standing up and demanding that we not imprison families. That families have the right to a fair immigration process. And we’re here to join you in saying shut it down,” said Karen Showalter, of Shut Down Berks Coalition.

The Department of Human Services says an Emergency Removal Order cannot be issued unless misconduct is found at the facility.

Governor Wolf has called on the Trump Administration to shut the center down in the past.
