Dover Township man charged in fatal June crash

A Dover Township man is charged with vehicular homicide for a two-vehicle crash that caused the death of his 18-year-old passenger.

Michael F. Mendez II, 23, failed to stop at the four-way intersection of Emig Mill Road and Mayfield Drive before crashing a 2012 BMW 328i into a 2001 Ford Escape, an unoccupied vehicle, and a wooden, split-rail fence on the night of June 15, Northern York County Regional police said.

Police said Mendez initially fled the scene but surrendered to police a short time later. He was not injured. His passenger, Chase Hartlaub, died from his injuries.

The 21-year-old driver of the Ford was uninjured.

Mendez also faces a felony count of accidents involving death or personal injury, a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment, and seven summary traffic offenses.
