An inmate died at a hospital after injuring himself at York County Prison early Monday.
Coroner Pam Gay said the inmate became agitated and began hitting his head against the inside of his single-cell door around 4:20 a.m.
Correctional officers took the inmate to the prison’s medical clinic where he became unresponsive.
Resuscitative efforts began and the inmate was transferred to York Hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 5:46 a.m., Gay said.
The inmate’s name was not immediately released and the cause and manner of his death are pending autopsy results.
The autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.
