York police seek person of interest in fatal shooting

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) - Marquis Butts is in shock after his cousin, Nylik Moore, lost his life along East Maple Street.

"They shot my cousin," said Butts. "I didn't want to even be on this earth after I heard that."

Butts describes his cousin as cool, funny, and with an infectious smile.

"We grew up together. We slept in the same bed together and everything. We did everything together. It was just me and him," said Butts. "I can't even cry. I'm so angry. I've got so much rage in me. This doesn't make any sense. I didn't even sleep last night."

Mayor Michael Helfrich says a team including York police, U.S. Marshals, and U.S Attorneys organized after the two shootings.

"If you are out there and hearing this and continuing to think that this is a place you can shoot up and put innocent lives at risk, you are wrong and you have been warned that the team I mentioned is coming for you," said Helfrich.

The first shooting, on Park Street and Park Place, happened Tuesday morning. The victim, Walter Jenkins is in stable condition after being shot in the head.

The second shooting along East Maple Street happened just six hours later. A shot to Nylik's chest took his life. Another man was injured.

Police Chief Troy Bankert would not say if the incidents are connected. He is asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything about the shootings to come forward.

"The lack of witnesses that we get, we understand why because they're scared of the retaliation as well. The issue is that it makes it very difficult then to investigate," said Bankert.

Flickering candles serve as a remembrance of the life Nylik's family says they'll hold forever in their hearts.

"At the end of the day, my cousin is going to be around. He'll always be remembered. He'll never be forgotten," said Butts.

Anyone with information is asked to call police. You can remain anonymous. Helfrich says people can talk to him if they're too scared to speak to officers.
