Racing community gladly waits hours for tables during fundraiser to honor driver

Racing fans continued to pay their respects for fallen driver Greg Hodnett on Thursday.

It was standing room only — and even that was packed at Mama’s Pizza in Wellsville as the restaurant employed Hodnett’s fellow drivers to wait tables for the night.

In addition to the money raised from diners, there were also raffles for Hodnett merchandise.

During certain parts of the day, the wait for tables was close to five hours, which is something members of the racing community say is no surprise, because they stick together no matter what.

“Whether you see them once a year or every weekend, that’s why we’re all here. We’re a big family, and when someone loses a life like this we just get together and do what we can for them,” said Jared Esh, driver who waited tables during the event.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Hodnett family. Mama’s pizza will present the check to Hodnett’s family on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway.
