After 141 years, a beloved shoe business in York is closing its doors.
Reineberg’s Shoes and Shoe Repair is preparing for their final days of shoe fitting.
The business made a name for itself when it first opened on South George Street in 1877. It stayed in the family and opened a new location just a half-block away in 1940.
In 1974, when it became Bob Reineberg’s turn to take the reins, he and his brother became the fourth generation to own the store. When you walk into his shop, it doesn’t take long to know shoes are in Bob’s blood.
“To me, it’s a natural thing,” Bob Reineberg said. “I can talk about shoes, talk about footwear, talk about feet. It’s a part of me.”
Known for their great selection and customized care, Reineberg’s has something that most shoe stores don’t: an honest love for the craft.
“Things are just things,” Bonnie Reineberg said. “What’s important is the memories.”
Bob and Bonnie have two children but they weren’t interested in keeping the business. They say they’re looking forward to retirement.
Their going out of business sales begin Wednesday.
