YWCA York to close fitness center, add yoga

York

YWCA York will close its fitness center in September.

CEO Jean Treuthart said competition from larger gyms has kept the fitness center’s membership at a standstill. YWCA fitness centers in Harrisburg and Lancaster have already closed.

YWCA York is looking to change its fitness model. It plans to add a mindfulness yoga program to its aquatic center, which is not closing.

“Mindfulness is yoga,” Treuthart said. “It can be meditation and it can be opportunities for our staff for self-care, which is one of our primary purposes, but we also know that people are living in a really busy challenging world these days, and we think there’s going to be great interest in that as well.”

Members who have already paid for a year-long membership will be refunded if they choose not to continue with the yoga and aquatic club. The new yoga program will be introduced in January.
