MAMMA’S PIZZA of Wellsville will be holding a fundraiser for Greg Hodnett’s family. The local racing star was killed in a crash last week.
The event is Thursday, September 27, since Hodnett’s number was 27.
Former competitors will now join Hodnett’s team, by serving as waiters at the fundraiser.
“The racing community is one big family,” said Ronald Rutherford, who owns MAMMA’S PIZZA of Wellsville. “Everybody knows everybody.”
Rutherford is a longtime racing fan, and knew the Hodnetts.
“We’re getting ready to open a second shop, which was next door to Sherry Hodnett’s facility,” said Rutherford.
When Rutherford heard about the dirt track driver’s tragic death, he decided it’s time to give back.
“I get a lot of support from racing people in my business, so it’s the right thing to do to show that I appreciate their support,” said Rutherford.
Hodnett, who was a Spring Grove, York County resident, was one of the most successful racers on the PA circuit.
All profits from the event will go to Hodnett family.
You can order for pickup or delivery, but if you dine in, you’ll get a special treat.
“We have some really well-known names to be our guest waiters,” said Hodnett.
Among the drivers who will volunteer are Carson Macedo, Brent Marks and Justin Henderson.
Rutherford says to expect some longer wait times, given the great interest in honoring Hodnett.
Fans say the 49-year-old made a positive impact both on and off the track.
“Greg was very fan-friendly,” said Tylar Rutherford, an Etters resident. “He was a good guy and it’s sad to see something like that happen.”
“He’s just one-of-a-kind,” said Ronald Rutherford. “Family man. Racing is secondary to him. He is a family guy first. I know he had some grandchildren. Most definitely a legend in this area.”
The waiters will get to the event at 4 p.m., but the fundraiser will run all day long.
