The Great American Outdoor Show is next month in Harrisburg but Harrisburg Police will not be attending.

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse says Harrisburg City Police will not staff the upcoming gun show, which is sponsored by the NRA.

In the past, the city staffed officers and the NRA made a donation to Harrisburg City Police in return. In 2015, that donation was $50,000.

This year, Papenfuse says the NRA is donating money and most of it is going to the Civil war Museum, which the mayor wants to close.

Papenfuse says the lack of a donation to the police department is not the only reason police won’t be there.

“We have an epidemic of gun violence. It’s no secret that the NRA has worked against the city’s interests repeatedly over the past year causing us to spend tens of thousands of dollars to defend common sense gun ordinances. We don’t need to be doing them any favors,” said Papenfuse.

The Great American Outdoor Show is February 6 – 14 at the Farm Show Complex.
