Pa. bill would hike penalty for drug thefts from seniors

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – People who steal medicine from elderly Pennsylvanians would face increased jail time under a bill pending in the state legislature.

House Bill 511 calls for a minimum sentence of one year in prison for those who unlawfully take prescription drugs from someone over age 60, and at least six months behind bars when the theft is by deception.

State Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) said his proposal would address the growing problem of prescription medication theft in Pennsylvania by holding accountable those who exploit the elderly.

In addition to cutting down on elder abuse, Bizzarro said he hopes the legislation would help curb prescription drug abuse in the state.
