HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Winter is finally falling on the Midstate. To help you better plan your commute when there’s winter weather, PennDOT has a new tool on PA511.com: a plow truck tracker.
On the website, above the state map, simply click the “plow truck” box.
“Then, you will be able to see, statewide, trucks that are equipped with the AVL, which is a tracking system,” PennDOT spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler said. “If they’re actually looking at this and seeing where the trucks are, they may think that we don’t have enough trucks out there working.”
That’s because this is a pilot program. Not all trucks have the tracking technology.
“It’s part of the governor’s desire for transparency, for being able to see where we are all the time,” Schreffler said. “It’s a way for our managers to better manage our resources.”
Midstaters seem to dig it.
“Why not follow the biggest thing pushing the snow?” Chad Ginter of Harrisburg said.
“At one time I probably would’ve used it a lot because I traveled a lot, all over Central PA. Now, I’m thinking about that,” said Ken Wert of Enola. “It would probably benefit customers or people who really need to travel and to see where the roads are open and where the trouble spots would be.”
PennDOT will decide at a later date if the tracker is beneficial enough to outfit all trucks with the technology.Get breaking news, weather and traffic on the go. Download the ABC 27 News App and the ABC 27 Weather App for your phone or tablet.
