Bill introduced to end religious, philosophical exemptions for vaccines

Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Pennsylvania senator has introduced legislation to eliminate the religious and philosophical exemptions in the state’s immunization law.

Senate Bill 653 allows exemptions only when a pre-existing health problem would conflict with the immunization requirements.

State Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware) introduced the measure after recent outbreaks of mumps and measles.

“We have an obligation to respect the scientific consensus and act rationally,” Leach said in a statement. “All of the science says vaccines save many lives and stop the spread of easily-preventable but deadly diseases.

“It would be legislative malpractice not to do all we can to ensure that our children are protected,” he said.
