Blood donations down in January after shutdown, severe weather

Pennsylvania

The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood. Drives across the country were canceled last month due to severe weather and the partial government shutdown.

The non-profit said in a release that 4,600 blood and platelet donations went uncollected during the month of January nationwide. In Pennsylvania, 15 blood drives were canceled.

The government shutdown also affected donations. More than four percent of blood collections come from drives sponsored by military and local, state and federal government agencies.

There is a blood drive Saturday, February 2 from noon- 5 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops at the Harrisburg Mall.
