Catholic school fires unwed teacher over pregnancy

Pennsylvania

A Catholic school teacher in the Harrisburg diocese says she was fired after the school learned she’s pregnant and not married.

Naiad Reich taught at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Northumberland County. She says she was let go Friday after she announced that she’s expecting to the school administrator, former Bishop McDevitt principal Sister Mary Anne Bednar.

Reich said she could have kept her job if she planned on marrying her boyfriend, but she says they want to get married on their own terms. The couple said they bear no ill will toward the school or the diocese.

“This is their beliefs and their moral code and what they live by and I understand that,” Reich said. “Though I don’t agree with it, I understand.”

A diocesan spokesperson said its employees agree to follow the teachings, doctrine, and laws of the Catholic church as part of the hiring process.
