A school shooting may have been foiled after a tip was sent into the state’s school threat hotline.
Hazleton police said the tip was sent to the Safe2Say Something hotline on Thursday morning.
The tip said a 14-year-old student made a threat against Hazleton Area schools on SnapChat.
Within hours of receiving the report, police went to the student’s home and found a loaded .45-caliber handgun. It was licensed but not stored in a safe place.
Police said they were told the gun was in a locked area, but they found it in the open, on top of a bedroom nightstand.
Police took the gun for safekeeping and the teen was taken to police headquarters.
Officers were at the schools Thursday. A criminal investigation is underway.
