HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Republican candidate for state Senate is drawing criticism about anti-Muslim posts on his Facebook page.

Doug Mastriano is running in a special election for Pennsylvania’s 33rd Senate district, which includes Franklin County and parts of Adams, Cumberland, and York counties. His Democratic opponent, Sarah Hammond, provided the Facebook posts to ABC27 News.

Mastriano, an Army veteran, shared the posts to his campaign Facebook page. One post has a photo of two Middle Eastern men smiling as the Notre Dame cathedral burns behind them. The caption reads “something wicked comes this way.”

A second post reads, “Islam wants to kill gay rights, Judaism, Christianity and pacifism.” Another openly attacks a Muslim U.S. lawmaker.

Many of the posts have since been removed.

“To already be shutting out members of our community, that’s really dangerous,” Hammond said.

Calls to Mastriano’s campaign office were not returned.
