Volunteers needed to drive elderly

A transportation service in Lower Paxton Township needs help.

Dozens of elderly people depend on a private van service to get to doctor appointments, the grocery store, or to socialize. To keep the service running, they need more volunteers.

To ride the Senior Van, you have to live in Lower Paxton Township and be at least 60 years old.

One special young lady, Elisabeth Ellenbogen, meets that criteria.

The man she calls her lifesaver, George Scott, is helping her independence thrive. If you have the time, he wants you to get involved.

It’s a normal day for Scott, the Senior Transportation president. It’s 8:30 in the morning on a Tuesday and he’s pulling up to Elisabeth’s house. She’s ready to go to the Community Senior Center for Spanish class.

A car pulls up to get it and Scott says, “I call it seniors driving seniors”.

Elisabeth, a student of life, is armed with her book bag, lunch box, and fanny pack.

She gently eases herself into the van, settles up at a dollar per ride, and the pair hit the pavement.

“I’ve been riding the van for 17 and a half years,” Elisabeth said. “God, I’m old!”

Elizabeth’s story has been told before: bad eyes leading to surgery and a loss of her independence.

“I asked the surgeon if I could think about driving,” she said. “He said a single word: no.”

Now, to get to doctor appointments, the grocery store, or social activities, Elisabeth rides in the passenger seat of the Senior Van.

“This was established in 1985,” Scott said. “We’re the largest van service in Central PA. We run an average of more than 325 trips per month”.

These angels behind wheels are in need of more fuel.

“We need volunteers,” Scott said. “You only have to do one four-hour shift a week.”

“There is an ancient Hebrew expression that the true good deed is the one that can never be repaid. This is a true, good deed: to drive me,” Elisabeth said.

More than a dozen volunteers are needed weekly. There are two shifts a day Monday through Friday.
The shifts are 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m.

To get involved, call 717-657-5650.
