Applications at Texas Tech soar during March Madness

Big Tournament

LUBBOCK, Tex. (KLBK) — In just the last six days, the admissions office is trying hard to keep track of all the people who are hopeful of getting accepted into Texas Tech. They’re getting about 140 applications every day, in the rush to meet the May 1st priority deadline.

“It has certainly impacted the number of applications we’re receiving,” said Jamie Hansard, executive director of undergraduate admissions at Tech.

Before Tech’s trip to the Final Four, the admissions office received about 50 applications a day. That number has nearly tripled since Saturday, after the team beat Gonzaga.

“Anytime we’re recognized especially when we get to be on a national stage like this it definitely influences the admissions office and recruitment activity that’s going on,” Hansard said.

The undergraduate admissions website has also blown up. Even potential students who live out of state are expressing interest, Hansard said. Online traffic has increased 46 percent with new visitors this week.

“We’ve had 2,200 students that have clicked that they want to complete an application,” Hansard said.

With a number of these email blasts since Sunday, Hansard says over 2,000 prospective students say they’re interested in touring the Tech campus.

“Over the last weekend we’ve seen the highest number of visitors over the last few months, and the second highest over the last year,” said Mitchel Locke, digital marketing manager.

Hansard said anytime the school has a major accomplishment they see a spike in applications.

“It doesn’t just affect the immediate, it has long lasting affects,” Hansard said.
